Your bowl has been protected by my own food-safe finish made of only pure, natural tung oil, which is pressed from the nut of the tung tree, and pure citrus oil, which is pressed from citrus rind. You can be assured that there are no added driers or chemicals, so my bowls are perfectly safe for serving food, with no qualification. This finish protects the wood, polishes to a wonderful matte sheen that highlights and deepens the figure of the wood, but doesn’t mask its warm feel or natural beauty.
Each bowl is delivered with a small tin of my restorative Bowl Balm™, which is similar to my own special bowl finish, with the addition of natural beeswax. I recommend applying Bowl Balm™ when the wood begins to look or feel dry. Just rub it on, let dry overnight, and buff with a soft cloth. It also works great on other wooden ware, such as spoons, spatulas and cutting boards. Bowl Balm™ has a relatively short shelf life as its oils dry with exposure to air, but you can order more as needed. Bowl Balm™ can be softened if necessary by putting it in a warm place, or setting it in a shallow pan of hot water. Do not heat on a burner or with an open flame!
Yes, you can put food in your bowl, and I encourage it. Salad and food oils will be absorbed by the wood, which will deepen its natural color and highlight its figure even more. After use, clean your bowl by wiping lightly with a damp, soapy cloth, rinse, then immediately wipe dry. Your bowl has been protected by my own food-safe finish, which cleans easily and thoroughly. I have included a small tin of my restorative Bowl Balm™ with your bowl that you should apply when your bowl looks “dry”, and in need of refreshment. Bowl Balm™ contains pure tung oil and citrus oil, as well as pure beeswax. Just wipe on a thin layer and let it soak in overnight.
